Pompeii, and its sister city, Herculaneum, are ruined and partially buried Roman cities in the Italian region of Campania.
The two cities were completely buried under ash and pumice after an eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius on August 24th, 79AD.
Pompeii was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748.
Since then, its excavation has provided a detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman empire.
When buried under the ash and rubble of Mount Vesuvius, the lack of moisture and air allowed for objects to avoid deterioration.
