When in Verona… Restaurants

Earlier this year (2008), the Guardian wrote a travel article about the city of Verona, after Venice the most beautiful and romantic city in the region of Veneto, in Northern Italy. Since I am sure the Guardian is much more venerable and knowledgeable than I am, I humbly follow their advice as to what are the most important Verona tourist attractions, restaurants and night life spots.

Night spots – eating

Verona is in a mountain area and its citizens accordingly believe in eating well, so be prepared for big portions. A lunch menu will generally set you back between 12 and 15 Euros, but it will be worth it since it will easily keep you going until dinner.

Osteria del Duca – (Via Arche Scaligere 2; 00 39 045 594 474) – for a romantic meal next door to Romeo’s palazzo
Osteria Vecchia Fontanina – (Piazzetta Chiavica 5; 00 39 045 595 159)
Osteria al Carro Armato – (Vicolo Gatto 2; 00 39 045 803 0175) – locals and tourists fraternize around wooden communal tables
Il Desco – (Via dietro di San Sebastiano 7; 00 39 045 595 358), two Michelin stars, seven-course tasting menu 125 Euros.
Al Cristo – (Piazzetta Pescheria 6; 00 39 045 594 287, €50), designer decor with fusion cuisine

Shopping in Verona

When in Verona…. Shopping

Shopping in Verona

Clothes

Verona’s main shopping street is its pedestrian high street, Via Mazzini, with shops and boutiques ranging vrom the very cheapest to the most explusive designer labels.  One of the most interesting shops on the Via Mazzini is the Fiorucci store Love Therapy (Via Mazzini 4). The tiny boutique Cecile (Via Salvatore Corte Reggia 9), stocks vintage vintage Prada, Cavalli and Valentino, and on Corso Santa Anastasia 36 Fatto a Mano (translated Done by Hand) features young Italian designers working in Thai silks.

Food

The Salumeria Albertini (Corso Santa Anastasia 41), perfect for dried porcini, handmade tortellini and an outstanding selection of the region’s wine – take back a potent amarone produced by the Allegrini family.

Other

Large numbers of expensive boutiques testify to the fact that Verona is one of Italy’s most important jewelery centres.

Verona Hotels: Affordable 2 Star Accommodation

Two star hotels in Verona, in the center and also outside of town.

Verona is a provincial capital in Veneto, in Northern Italy, one of the country’s richest areas where everything is more expensive than in, for instance, Rome. Of course this is also true for the hotels and bed and breakfasts in Verona. Some of the hotels mentioned below are situated in the heart of Verona, near the Arena, near Romeo’s Juliet’s balcony and the pedestrian area and shopping district of the city,  some are located near Verona’s central Porta Nuova station and yet others can be found in the suburbs of and even the hills around Verona. The rates mentioned are averages, taken over the course of a year. Especially during the opera season (July and August) the hotel rates tend to be higher of course.

In case you don’t feel like reading the information about the accommodation, we recommend that you take a look at this list of all hotels in Verona that have availability during the period you are interested in.
